In January, February and March 2006 residents at Gerald Court, young people involved with CABE's space lift public arts project, parents and toddlers at Springfield Road One Stop Shop and members of the over 50's club at St Stevens Church contributed to the process of determining ten colours for use in new building developments in Burnley Wood.
The workshops enabled participants to create work using coloured paper, graphic art pens, tempera colour paints and oil pastels, some participants were inspired by artists like Jackson Pollock, Henri Matisse and Pierre Modrian, whilst many preferred to create their own art works.
Whilst participants were busy and engrossed in their work, conversation focussed on the use of colour, and the reasons for individual and collective colour preferences and colour choices. These were varied, a colour evoked a fond memory, a life changing event, a particular place, time of day, or because 'its always been my favourite colour'. The consensus message emerging from all the groups was that the grey-dark brown days of the past were over. People wanted to see and enjoy brighter, purer colour reflecting a new era of positive change taking place in their communities, colour to uplift your spirit and brighten your day - colours for the 21st century.
Action Factory worked in partnership with PfP Developments, PRP Architects, Calico Homes and Arts Development Burnley Borough Council.
