'In the Dhol Drums' Community Parade

VIEW PROJECT GALLERY

'In the DholDrums' Community Parade was a stunning and colourful
event which engaged groups and individuals from the local area in the
'Celebrate Blackburn' Festival. Artists Jen MacConnel and Sue Walpole
spent the month of June working with groups across Blackburn creating
carnival costumes and structures on the theme of 'Sunshine and
Showers'. Both artists have a particular passion for creating work from
recyled materials and much of the parade was created from waste from
the textile industry, scrap art materials and recycled objects.

The
project provided an opportunity for local people to experiment with new
techniques, working alongside the artists to create large and
impressive carnival structures which wowed the crowds at the festival.

The
parade brought together people who would not normally have the chance
to meet in a fun and friendly high profile event, helping break down
barriers and broadening people's experience and we are hopeful that
this will become a key part of the annual Blackburn Festival.

The project was funded by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council as part of 'Celebrate Blackburn.'

'In the Dhol drums' is a promenade drumming performance by Walk the Plank and this is the first time the performance has been accompanied by a community parade.
