During their art week in March 2007, pupils from years 3 and 4 at St Nicholas Primary school in Accrington worked with Action Factory to improve the appearance of the Junior cloakroom in their school. Consultation with pupils had identified that these pupils felt excluded from opportunities and activities in the school, and had also shown that pupils felt that this area of the school was in desperate need of decoration.
Staff were keen that pupils had opportunities to try new, creative art techniques that they many not normally have access to, that they were able to express themselves creatively during the week and that they were able to make a positive and high profile contribution to the school.
Pupils worked with an artist to create an underwater world using collage, papier mache, tin craft, painting and other techniques.
The space is now a vibrant and exciting addition to the building, full of characters and colour, and the children who participated feel proud of their contribution to the school.
A teacher from the school said "All the children were able to contribute. They planned, drafted and edited their designs on paper and were able to transform their deisgns in to a finished product. Everyone is thrilled with your input, the result and the project."
