"ART AS A CATALYST FOR CARING AND SHARING"
Action Factory threw open its doors on 16th February for the third time to celebrate World Community Arts Day. The fun started at 11am with things to do throughout the day till 5pm.
We tried out something new as we invited Love Bytes to come and run a digital butterfly workshop where hand-crafted butterflies are turned into a digital animated landscape.
We all took part in a "paint by numbers" Big Society painting. Lucy created a piece of work that proved to be very popular where many hands made light work! Everyone who attended the day was asked to put their thumb to paper to colour in the squares one at a time. A large picture began to emerge from the many thumbprints of different colours.
Nicole, our resident dance expert, led us in a flash mob dance. Her innovative use of Microsoft Powerpoint to create an animated prompt for all the dancers worked really well, as everyone found their groove and danced to "Love Train" by the O'Jays.
Shamz led the way by flexing his writing muscles and created some Headline Poetry. Many people found headlines and words from newspapers to make poems that were displayed on canvas. Some quite poignant writing emerged.
Rome took several groups through a drumming and singing workshop. It was hard to resist the rhythm as the participants got a feel for the beat.
We are one of the most recorded country in the world by the many CCTV cameras that dot our towns, we are gave people a chance to write a message to be photographed by our own CCTV camera. Some interesting messages were recorded. We plan to collate this in a gallery and ask people to add their own messages independently.
Julian produced some flamboyant hats in his retro workshop "Get Ahead Get a Hat". The three classes from our local school all left sporting a creation from this activity.
Thanks for everyone who came and participated and also to those who came to help, it was an inspiring and fun day, it helps us to remember what community arts is all about.
